How does Hardy show social injustice in the 19th Century in England? :: Free Essay Writer
How does Hardy show social injustice in the 19th Century in England? Thomas Hardy was born in 1840 and died in 1928 at the age of 88. Thomas Hardyââ¬â¢s father was a stonemason and his mother a servant to a vicar. Hardy could not afford to continue his education as he wished and was apprenticed to John Hicks, a local church architect from 1862 to 1867. He served as assistant to Arthur Bloomfield, a London architect. Hardy hated London and returned to Dorset and worked for Hicks until 1874. Despite his employment Hardy was writing continually during this period of life. Over the next 22 years Hardy wrote 15 novels, more than 1000 poems and 4 volumes of short stories. Hardy wrote in these short stories about the law, class difference, womenââ¬â¢s position in the society and city versus the countryside. Most of his stories are set in the Wessex, a fictional name that he gave to his stories. His stories are set 50 years back in the past and show the hardships, sufferings, trials and tribulations experienced by the working class. This book is from the collection of the stories The Withered Arm and other Wessex Tales. When Hardy became an architect he went to work in London. However, he missed the Dorset countryside so much that he returned there in 1867 and began writing novels and poetry. This was the first of many of his novels describing characters and scenes from country life. Hardyââ¬â¢s views about the countryside versus the city were about the injustice of the loss of the old way of life. Hardy went to work in London in 1862. He took a return ticket with him in case he repented his decision to work there. His aversion for London is apparent in his comments where he describes London as, ââ¬Å"the monster with four million heads and eight million eyes.â⬠Hardy describes the city in The Sonââ¬â¢s Veto, as Sophie is looking through the window at ââ¬Å"a fragment of lawn,â⬠which shows the lack of greenery and space in London. He describes the air as, ââ¬Å"hazy air,â⬠which shows the huge amount of pollution in London unlike the pleasant and fresh air of the countryside. Hardy portrays all the houses in London as, ââ¬Å"drab house facades,â⬠which shows the ugly and depressing houses in London. The, ââ¬Å"ever flowing traffic,â⬠and other quotes just shows the repulsive and the disheartening city of London. Hardy approves of smuggling in The Distracted Preacher. Legally smugglers are to be penalized but every one ignores the law in The Distracted Preacher. Lizzy says, ââ¬Å"it has been their practice for

Tina Baughman Versus Walt Disney World Company - 897 Words
Tina Baughman versus Walt Disney World Company Most individuals are familiar with Disneyland, otherwise known as the happiest place on earth. Walt Disney, the founder, envisioned a theme park where families can have fun and create memories together. With his vision, he created a magical world with five different lands both adults and children can enjoy. Americans with Disabilities Case In 2012, a woman named Tina Baughman filed for a lawsuit against Walt Disney World Company for failing to comply with her condition. Using the Americans with Disabilities Act, Baughman asserts Disneyland denied to offer full and equal access to the theme park (Tina Baughman v. Walt Disney World Company, 2012). Baughman is diagnosed with limb girdle muscular dystrophy, and thus has difficulty with walking (Tina Baughman v. Walt Disney World Company, 2012). Because Baughman has trouble standing from a seated position, she believes using a two-wheeled mobility system called a Segway is necessary. Segways allow Baughman to step into rides and buildings without struggling to stand up from a seated position (Tina Baughman v. Walt Disney World Company, 2012). In addition, the Segway permits Baughman to be eye-level with guests and workers. Walt Disney World Company, the defendant, claims wheelchairs are an adequate mode of transportation (Tina Baughman v. Walt Disney World Company, 2 012). Baughmanââ¬â¢s discomfort with using a wheelchair is not Disneylandââ¬â¢s concern. The judge ruled in favor

Black Holes For College Tuition - 1069 Words
I could tell you about how growing up with two moms isnââ¬â¢t the easiest or how watching their fights escalate to physicality in one night isnââ¬â¢t a ten year old girlââ¬â¢s favorite thing to see. I could tell you how custody battles are black holes for college tuition and very frustrating, especially the seven year long ones with no foreseeable end. I could tell you how waking up to find that just upstairs your mom had died laying next to your two younger brothers isnââ¬â¢t the easiest news to hear and how moving in with your grandma and going to a new school your sophomore year isnââ¬â¢t easy. I could tell you how putting a blanket over your grandma after sheââ¬â¢s fallen asleep on the couch and praying to a god that I donââ¬â¢t even believe in that he doesnââ¬â¢tâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦She didnââ¬â¢t expect to lose her mom before she could even graduate high school, or her brothers graduate middle school and certainly my grandmother did not expe ct to have to bury her own child and yet sheââ¬â¢s still been a rock for us. She has had to be because she knows everything will have to be okay eventually. But on that day, when my mom died, nobody ever said those magical words to me. Nobody but myself. At least my brothers had me to blame for the false hope, but I didnââ¬â¢t know how I was going to live with myself thinking that I let them down because no, my mom wasnââ¬â¢t okay and I knew that the second I saw her blue lips and colorless feet. Some people feel the need to force others to grow up in an instant. To just face reality head on and completely vulnerable, but this is what leaves people messed up. Isnââ¬â¢t it? My imagination lets me enter this realm of unsteadiness yet pure placidness that I just canââ¬â¢t fathom having in reality. It seems that some people think of those that escape to this realm for comfort as cowards. I know thatââ¬â¢s what I thought about Paul Berlin at first. To be honest, I was getting a little annoyed by his constant jumping back and forth from imagination to reality, but as his story went on, all I wanted to read about were the thoughts going on in his head. Iââ¬â¢ve spent the past couple years developing this other world for myself to

ââ¬Å¡ÃâúGenderââ¬Å¡Ãâù and the Importance of ââ¬Å¡Ãâúthe Social...
ââ¬Å"Genderâ⬠and the Importance of ââ¬Å"The Social Construction of Gender.â⬠Gender is an individual s natural sense of themselves existing as a male or female, which may hold opposing views from their biological sex. I believe sex and gender are two terms used interchangeably. Sex implies the biological characteristics among females and males. Whereas gender implies the social qualities connected with being a female or male. As Lorber states, ââ¬Å"I am arguing that bodies differ physiologically, but they are completely transformed by social practices to fit into the salient categories of a society, the most persuasive of which areââ¬â¢femaleââ¬â¢ and ââ¬Ëmaleââ¬â¢ and ââ¬Ëwomenââ¬â¢ and ââ¬Ëmenââ¬â¢.â⬠(pg. 11) An emphasis on gender not only exposes knowledge about women andâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦However, by labeling according to gender is another way of swaying members of a society and to encourage inequalities. There are recognizable biological and culture differences amid the two sexes but we cannot use these varian ces to reason our conclusions and deliver stereotyped ideas about gender. Another form of sexism is portrayed by damaging stereotypical interpretations in the direction of women. For instance, sexism ideas of women are concentrated on the beliefs that women are secondary to men due to insignificant ideas that one can hold again women. One mark of gender socialization is the configuration of gender identity, which is oneââ¬â¢s distinction of oneself as a man or woman. Gender identity molds how we judge others and ourselves which then impacts our actions. For instance, gender distinctions are present in the possibility of drug and alcohol abuse, violent atmospheres, and depression. Gender identity furthermore has an predominantly powerful effect on our emotions about our exterior reflection and our body image. Broadminded feminists reason that gender inequality is applicable from past traditions that create obstacles to womenââ¬â¢s development. It underlines individual moralities and equal opportunity as the foundation for social justice and reform. These feminists, alternatively, debate that the root of womenââ¬â¢s oppression resides with the

Effective Theory and Current Issues in Accounting
Question: Discuss about the Effective Theory and Current Issues in Accounting. Answer: Introduction: Financial health is one of the effective indicators of business potentiality of any corporate organization or a nation. It highlights the overall growth of economic infrastructure as well. To remain consistent in the measurement of growth, an organization needs to understand the financial scenario accordingly. For this basic reason, financial literacy is required for all the companies management along with their financial officers (Collings Loughran, 2013). The knowledgeable content within corporate environment tends to lead the companies towards greater revenues as well as profits i.e. more success and consistent growth. Fundamentally, the growth is replicated by capital investment, more revenues, profits and financial balances. These financial terms are known as basic financial elements. For a corporate organization, the measurement of the financial elements is one of the most important determinants according to its overall management criteria. There are several measurement facili ties that aid the companies in order to assist them in their financial measurements (Henderson, Peirson, Herbohn Howieson, 2015). In this similar context, the study highlights the different accounting theories and their implications for the companies policies in order to evaluate the financial measurements. The major aim of this assignment is to analyze five elements related to financial elements of International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) conceptual framework are measured by listed companies. The objectives of this study are segregated as follows: Recognize the financial elements according to measurement criteria Evaluation of different accounting theories and their implications on financial elements Generate conceptual framework for complex financial elements to apply accounting activities according to the measurement theories Gaining knowledge regarding the financial frameworks to evade the accounting issues and problems of the companys financial environment These objectives are addressed in the following sections. Concepts of Financial Elements Financial statements are a part of IFRS conceptual framework. The basic requirements of these statements are associated with the financial reporting purposes of private as well as public sectors. The financial statement encompasses financial elements such as assets, liabilities, equity, revenue, and expenses. The first three financial elements such as assets, liabilities and equity come under balance sheet of the company and the revenue along with expenses are included into the income statement. In addition, changes in any of these elements are significantly noted in the cash flow statement of the company (Accounting tools, 2016; Australian Accounting Standards Board, 1995). The brief descriptions of each of these elements are illustrated below: Assets. This financial element is associated with the future economic benefits. Fundamentally, it is controlled by the entity of a companys financial statements and shows the results of past transactions along with other prior financial events, which are expected to yield the benefits in the future periods. Such examples of assets accounts in a company are receivables, inventories and fixed assets. The asset can be recognized from the financial statement when it is anticipated that the future economic benefits of the company are personified. In addition, the value of assets can be measured in a reliable manner for which the company is able to focus towards its economic benefits (Accounting tools, 2016; Australian Accounting Standards Board, 1995). Liabilities. It replicates a companys future sacrifices through which it is capable to facilitate its beneficial journey towards growth. These are legally binding obligations of the company that are payable to another entity. Accounts payable, taxes payable and wages payable are example of liabilities (Accounting tools, 2016; Australian Accounting Standards Board, 1995). Equity. It is the amount that is invested in the business. It can also be depicted as the residual interest in the assets after the deduction of a companys liabilities (Accounting tools, 2016; Australian Accounting Standards Board, 1995). Revenue. It reflects a future beneficial financial aspect in the form of assets increase. Revenue is a quantified outcome of overall activities generated by the business. Product sales and service sales are the example of revenue of a company (Accounting tools, 2016; Australian Accounting Standards Board, 1995). Expenses. It is associated with the losses of a company reflected from the reduction of assets as it is used to generate revenue for a company. Both revenue as well as expenses are included into the income statement of a company. Interest expenses, compensation expenses along with utilities expenses are examples of expenses (Accounting tools, 2016; Australian Accounting Standards Board, 1995). Based on these financial elements, there are several financial theories and measurements that have evolved for standardization of corporate finance that also can strengthen the overall economic infrastructure accordingly. Contextually, it is determined that IFRS designed this common global financial language for effective corporate economic management so that the companies are capable of managing their accounts accordingly. The financial code of conducts by IFRS fundamentally assists companies to maintain an understandable as well as comparable scenario throughout the organizational environment across the geographical boundaries. IFRS is utilized in several countries throughout the world, except the United States (US). In the US, companies follow generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP), which is also adopted by Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). IFRS has affected business activities in the US in several ways due to mergers and acquisitions, capital-raising, along with non-US stakeholders, and non-US subsidiaries of companies. Hence, a majority of companies throughout the world have adopted IFRS in their financial statements (PWC, 2015; ICAEW, 2011). IFRS Systems Measurement Methodologies and Empirical Examples Financial reports measure the outcomes of the applications of measurement practices within economic activities. In a company, economic activities and measurements are associated with the financial reporting system through which it gains an understanding regarding the perceived financial problems in the environment along with the future concerns of economic incentives. Financial problems and their mitigation scenarios are associated with the measurement practices that are included in the financial reporting measurement system (Zulch Hendler, 2014). This entire process of measurement methodologies can be illustrated as below: Figure: The Development of Measurement Practices Source: (ICAEW, 2011) Based on the previously discussed financial elements, it is determined that there are several ways through which assets and liabilities can be measured. Companies depend on historical costs or current values to gain knowledge about practical as well as conceptual challenges. With respect to the measurement of assets and liabilities through the process of historical cost, time value of money is required to be considered. Historical cost is mainly allied with the conventional rules. Therefore, the conventional rules have to make adjustments with the depreciations and the financial impairments of a company. Typical characteristics of these of historical costs can make it challenging for the investors to interpret the outcomes effectively. On the other hand, current value is associated with a variety of alternative valuation methodologies. Additionally, it can be customized in order to fulfill the measurement criteria. According to Cooper (2015), the selection of a measurement method for a company is one of the controversial issues. In respect of financial measurement methods, Cooper (2015) depicted certain measurement standards apart from single measurement approach. International Accounting Standards Board (IASB) considers fair value measurements, but in this method relevant information is unable to cover the entire areas of financial measurements accordingly. IASB follows a view of mixed measurement approach for maintaining the standards. For instance, it is evaluated that IASB recently issued IFRS 9 financial instrument and IFRS 15 revenue from contracts with customers as two new standards. Final deliberations of standards are in progress (Cooper, 2015). To understand the financial measurement in different companies, the study highlights empirical examples from companies annual reports. Contextually, ABM Resources NL utilizes the mixed methodology of accounting policies for effective measurements.
